Four community clinics gave local school districts a double benefit this past summer: They offered student athletic physicals at a reduced price, then donated half the proceeds to the athletic departments at schools the students attend.

The Mediapolis Clinic, Morning Sun Clinic, Wapello Clinic and West Point Clinic participated in the program. All are part of Great River Health Systems.

Altogether, 250 students received physicals, and Great River Health Systems, in turn, donated $3,200 to these school districts: Columbus Junction, Danville, L&M, Marquette, Mediapolis, Morning Sun, New London, Wapello and Winfield-Mt. Union.

Certified physician assistants conducted the physicals and certified athletic trainers from Great River Center for Rehabilitation conducted total body orthopedic screenings, which included strength, range-of-motion and ligament testing. If weaknesses were found in any of these areas, such as tight hamstrings, the students received instructions for exercises that could help prevent sports injuries.
