Ann Hannum, director of nursing at the Great River Klein Center, recently was named Director of Nursing of the Year by the Iowa Health Care Association and Iowa Center for Assisted Living. She received a 2003 Excellence in Long-term Care Award Oct. 1 at the organizations’ annual convention in Des Moines.

Hannum has worked at Great River Medical Center for more than 30 years, the last four serving as director of nursing at the Klein Center. She had been head nurse in the Pediatrics and Obstetrics departments, and director of the Maternal-Child Health and Surgical Services departments.

“I am very honored to receive this award, and being nominated by my peers makes it even better,” Hannum said. “The members of the Klein Center staff are excellent caregivers and that makes my job easier. I have enjoyed a wide variety of experiences in my nursing career and now find I really enjoy long-term care.”

Hannum was nominated for the award by coworkers at the Klein Center.

“Ann is an involved leader who supports the staff,” said Patti Salsberry, the Klein Center’s care-plan coordinator. “She wears many hats and performs any task necessary to fulfill our residents’ needs. She has a teamwork philosophy and promotes it everyday. She is a resource person for problem solving and is a good leadership role model for all supervisors.”

The Iowa Health Care Association and Iowa Center for Assisted Living are nonprofit trade associations that represent approximately 75 percent of Iowa’s long-term care nursing facilities and 50 percent of Iowa’s assisted living programs.

Earlier this year, the Klein Center was named one of America’s Top Nursing homes by Consumers’ Research Council of America, the nation’s leading consumer group that evaluates professional services throughout the country.
