Great River Medical Center’s Auxiliary disbursed $55,220 in May. Eight area students who are pursuing college degrees in health-related fields received a combined total of $10,000 in scholarships. The remainder was given to the hospital for projects to enhance patient care.

Scholarships were awarded for two different categories and amounts. The scholarship recipients are:

High school students ($500 scholarships)
• Jaden Anders, LaHarpe (Ill.) High School, nursing
• Stephanie Hammer, Notre Dame High School, nursing
• Melissa McElhinney, Winfield/Mt. Union High School, nursing
• Joel Peterson, Burlington High School, Pharmacy
• Shannon Wiegard, Burlington High School, Pharmacy

Nontraditional students ($2,500 scholarships)
• Michelle Breuer, Gladstone, Ill., nursing, Iowa Wesleyan College
• Paula Lee, Burlington, nursing, Southeastern Community College
• Carrie Parker, Middletown, Iowa, nursing, SCC

The $45,220 donated to the hospital will be used for:
• Furniture, televisions and art for Acute Care Center waiting areas
• Glider chairs and artwork for Day Surgery bays
• Artwork for the Intensive Care Unit
• End-of-life comfort care cases for Spiritual Care
• Electronic keyboard and bench for the Klein Center’s Sapphire Wings Unit
• Plush animals for the Stuffed Love program
• DVDs for Psychiatric Care Unit
