March 29th, 2007

The first meeting of a support group for people with spinal-cord injuries is scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Snake Alley Rehabilitation at Great River Medical Center, 1221 S. Gear Ave., West Burlington. A light meal will be provided.

Besides establishing relationships with other people who have spinal-cord injuries, meeting topics will educate and empower participants to help them achieve and maintain the highest level of independence while living with their injury. Loved ones are invited to attend.

The support group will be facilitated by Bill Perkins, Middletown, Iowa, who received a T-5 spinal-cord injury in April 2004. He was hospitalized until the following November, having spent the initial weeks in a medically induced coma while his body began healing. Now in a wheelchair, Perkins, 45, and his family participate in outdoor activities, school functions and church boards. He also is a member of Pheasants Forever and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Reservations are requested. For more information or to register, please call Snake Alley Rehabilitation at (319) 768-4200.
