Two community clinics gave local school districts a double benefit this past summer: They offered student athletic physicals at a reduced price, then donated half the proceeds to the athletic departments at schools the students attend.

The Mediapolis Clinic, Wapello Clinic and West Point Clinic participated in the program. All are part of Great River Health Systems.

Altogether, 243 students received physicals, and Great River Health Systems, in turn, donated $3,645 to these school districts:
• Holy Trinity
• Mediapolis
• Notre Dame
• Wapello

Certified physician assistants and a physician conducted the physicals and certified athletic trainers from Great River Center for Rehabilitation conducted body orthopedic screenings, which included strength, range-of-motion and ligament testing. If the health professionals found weaknesses in any of these areas, such as tight hamstrings, the students received instructions for exercises that could help prevent sports injuries.
