Great River Klein Center Administrator Dick Miller has received the Excellence in Long Term Care Administrator of the Year Award from the Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA).

Under Miller’s direction, the Klein Center received the IHCA Quality First 5-Star Award and the American Health Care Association’s Step 1 Quality Award. In 30 years, he has led the facility through a variety of changes, the most recent being a long-term culture change that transforms traditional nursing homes into vibrant communities that celebrate the lives of the elders (residents) who live in them.

“During Dick’s tenure, he has overseen construction and remodeling projects, and has led the Klein Center in being recognized as one of the finest long-term care facilities in southeast Iowa,” said Mark Richardson, president and CEO, Great River Medical Center.

“He participates on numerous boards and committees – both locally and statewide – to help ensure quality of life for all seniors,” said Amy Vandiver, Klein Center Life Enhancement, who nominated Miller for the award. “Dick proudly represents the Klein Center and the elders we serve.”

Miller adds a personal touch to his work, such as making breakfast for elders and staff, joining card games, demonstrating his skill with stained glass and bringing some of the dogs he breeds for elders to enjoy.

“I think he is a most gracious man,” said Klein Center elder Helen Roach. “When I first came here, he helped me adjust to my new home. He knows us all by name and always has time to stop and see how we are.”

The Excellence in Long Term Care Awards are presented by the IHCA and Iowa Center for Assisted Living, nonprofit trade associations that represents approximately 560 nursing homes, assisted-living programs and residential care facilities in Iowa.

Great River Klein Center, a service of Great River Medical Center, is a 125-bed nursing home located at 2910 Madison Ave., Burlington.
