A hands-on educational clinic designed to introduce area youth the to the multi-sport of triathlon is scheduled from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at the Burlington Area Community YMCA-YWCA, 2410 Mt. Pleasant St., Burlington. The "Try the Tri" Youth Triathlon Clinic is sponsored by Team BEAST (Burlington Endurance Athlete Sports Team), a triathlon/endurance sports training club.
The clinic will introduce children ages 7 through 14 to the sport of triathlon and provide the basic information needed to complete their first triathlon. The clinic will be conducted by USA Triathlon-certified coaches in a positive and safe environment with an emphasis on having fun. The fee is $5. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children.
The clinic will feature four separate instructional stations highlighting the primary triathlon disciplines: swimming, biking, running and transition. Clinic instructors are experienced multi-sport athletes who will share their expertise and experience with the participants. Youth will have the opportunity to get a feel for what it is like to compete in a multi-sport event and what to expect on race day. Participants will be divided by age group. There also will be a short presentation on sports nutrition conducted by a certified nutritionist.
Youth are asked to bring a swimsuit, swim goggles, running shoes, a towel and change of clothes. Registration forms are available at the Burlington YMCA-YWCA. Same-day registration will be available from 3 to 4 p.m.
Team BEAST also is planning its first youth triathlon, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 28, in Dankwardt Park. Race distances will vary with ages. More information will be available closer to the race date.
