Great River Hospice is looking for additional volunteers to help meet the needs of people at end-of-life and their families in Des Moines, Henry, Lee and Louisa counties.
A four-part training program for those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 22, 24, 29 and Oct. 1 at Great River Hospice House, 1306 S. Washington Rd., West Burlington. Hospice volunteers may work with patients and their families in their homes or at the hospice house. They also can help in many other ways, such as providing companionship to patients, running errands for families, doing clerical work and planning fundraisers.
A two-part training for musician volunteers is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 22 and 24. Musician volunteers perform for patients to provide benefits including pain relief, stress management, memory enhancement and improvement of communication. Vocalists and instrumentalists are needed.
Potential volunteers must pass a criminal background check and be at least 16 years old. Registration and completion of application materials is required before the training begins. Volunteers with previous hospice training also are encouraged to join the Great River Hospice team. Only an orientation is required.
