Great River Hospice is bringing back a summer tradition. A Night at the Drive-in is scheduled Saturday, June 13, in the Great River Medical Center's employee parking lot. A full-size drive-in movie screen will be set up for the dusk showing of The Wizard of Oz. All proceeds will benefit Great River Hospice.
Gates will open at 6 p.m. Pre-movie activities include:
- Wizard of Oz Character Look-alike Contest - Come dressed as your favorite character from the movie for the chance to win Steamboat Days tickets and other great prizes!
- "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" Cake Walk
- Photos with Wizard of Oz characters
- Bounce house
- Face painting by Burlington High School cheerleadersBHS Cheerleaders
- Door prizes
- 50/50 raffle
Hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn, candy, soda, water and other items will be available for purchase at a concession stand operated by Tom's Market & Meats.
Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2009, The Wizard of Oz is the much-loved musical adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic novel. Kansas girl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) and her dog, Toto, are whisked by a tornado into the magical land of Oz. Dorothy joins the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion on an adventure down the Yellow Brick Road to persuade the wizard to help her find her way home.
Parking is first-come, first-served. Admission is by donation at the parking lot entrance along West Agency Road, across from Southeastern Community College. The cost of providing hospice care is greater than the amount received from insurance companies. Proceeds from the drive-in will help pay for the difference.
Great River Hospice met the needs of more than 350 patients at end of life and their families in 2008. It has been serving Des Moines, Henry, Lee and Louisa counties since 2002. Services usually are provided in patients' homes, which include private residences, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. When this is not possible, Great River Hospice patients may choose an alternative peaceful, homelike setting - Great River Hospice House.
A Night at the Drive-in is co-sponsored by American Ordnance, Reif Oil, The Hawk Eye and Two Rivers Bank and Trust. Other contributors are Burlington Steamboat Days, Burlington Bees' Baseball, Doran & Ward Printing, Farmer's Savings Bank, MidWestOne Bank, Standard of Beaverdale, Titan Broadcasting and 34 Raceways.
