March 18th, 2009Great River Klein Center has received the highest rating in a new service from the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS). The Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families and caregivers compare nursing homes. Nursing home ratings are taken from three data sources:
- Health inspections - Comprehensive assessments of health-care services and compliance with federal/state rules
- Quality measures - 19 specific measures such as percent of residents who have pressure ulcers (bed sores after their first 90 days in the nursing home), the number of residents whose mobility worsened after admission and if residents received the proper medical care
- Staffing - The number of hours of nursing and other staff care per patient per day
CMS assigns a star rating of one (much below average) to five (much above average) for each source. The three ratings are combined to calculate an overall rating. The Klein Center is among 12 percent of the nation's nursing homes that received five-star ratings, which are updated monthly.
"The Klein Center is proud of all the indicators of its quality, such as a Step I Quality Award from the American Health Care Association, the Iowa Health Care Association's Five-Star Quality Award, a resident-satisfaction rate that is higher than the state average and approval from our Resident Advocate Committee," said Dick Miller, administrator. "Gaining recognition as a Five-Star Quality Nursing Home from CMS demonstrates our continued commitment to quality care for our elders."
The Klein Center is a 125-bed nursing home located at 2910 Madison Ave., Burlington. It is a service of Great River Medical Center.
