February 24th, 2010Great River Medical Center offers free prenatal education classes for expectant mothers, fathers or birth coaches, and children. Classes are led by registered nurses who specialize in obstetrics and education. The March classes are:
Family Footprints, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning March 4. This six-week session is for women in their sixth or seventh months of pregnancy and birth coaches. Mothers-to-be should come dressed in comfortable slacks.
Besides an extensive tour of the Obstetrics Unit, the classes include lectures, videos and demonstrations on:
- Breathing and relaxation techniques
- Labor (includes practice for controlling labor)
- Newborn care
Prenatal Breastfeeding, 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 23. For all expectant mothers who want to learn more about breastfeeding their babies. Fathers are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Sibling Preparation, 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13. Children ages 2 through 10 will learn how an additional child will change their families and how they can help with this adjustment. The class includes:
- A tour of the Obstetrics Unit, including the Nursery
- Dressing up in hospital gowns, masks and caps
- Role playing for children
- Story time about having a baby
