SHIIP is a free, confidential service of the State of Iowa that provides unbiased information to help Iowans make decisions about Medicare and other health coverage. People should enroll in Medicare as soon as they turn 65. The 2011 Part D enrollment period is from Friday, Oct. 15, through Wednesday, Dec. 7.

“There are 215 people in Des Moines County who will turn 65 by the end of the year,” said SHIIP volunteer and seminar presenter Fred Kelly. “The seminars will be helpful to them and caregivers of people enrolled in Medicare.”

Kelly has been a SHIIP volunteer for nearly five years. New volunteers John Disselhorst and Rhonda Foster recently completed a six-day extensive training program in Des Moines. They provide one-on-one help with all aspects of Medicare.

“We are proud to offer SHIIP through Great River Medical Center’s Volunteer Services Department,” said Staci Fry, department director. “Having three volunteers will ensure quicker service, especially during the busy Part D enrollment period. We’re grateful for our volunteers’ dedication.”
