In its 19th year, Great River Friends’ Love Tree program is expanding. This year, there will be trees at Great River Hospice House, Great River Clinic, Mediapolis and Great River Clinic, Wapello, in addition to the trees in Great River Medical Center’s main lobby, Mercy Plaza lobby and Great River Klein Center.
The Love Tree program provides an opportunity to recognize family members and friends during the holidays while helping fund scholarships for students who are pursuing health-care careers. In 2011, Great River Friends provided $12,000 for scholarships.
The names of those honored or remembered are placed on decorative cards that are displayed on donors’ choices of Love Trees. Keepsake ornaments are included with donations of $20 or more per name. Traditional and whimsical styles are available. Ornaments will be displayed in Great River Gift Shop beginning Monday, Nov. 28.
A Love Tree lighting ceremony is scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in Great River Medical Center’s lobby. A tree near the Cafeteria patio also will be lighted that day. All Love Trees will remain lighted 24 hours a day throughout the holiday season.
Donors will be invited to a ceremony at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, in the Mercy Plaza lobby. It will include prayer, a reading of the names, presentation of name cards and ornaments, and refreshments. Those who do not attend may pick up ornaments in Great River Gift Shop through Tuesday, Jan. 31.
Built on a 116-year-old tradition of service, Great River Friends is a community of donors and volunteers who support Great River Health Systems with their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Through the Volunteer Services Department, Great River Friends:
- Encourages the community’s support of the health system
- Provides financial support for hospital services
- Provides scholarships to students pursuing careers in health care
- Recruits volunteers that help patients, Klein Center elders, families and employees
Love Tree donation forms are available near each tree. Donations are accepted by mail and at Great River Gift Shop, which accepts credit cards. For more information or to request a form, please call Great River Medical Center’s Volunteer Services Department at 319-768-3340.
