Great River Health Systems will offer seven free screenings and health assessments during the Southeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging Senior Health Fair. It is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Memorial Auditorium, 200 N. Front St., Burlington. They are:

  • Balance
  • Bone density
  • Depression
  • Diabetes foot screening
  • Fall risk
  • Stroke risk
  • Urinary incontinence

A reduced-price cholesterol (lipid) and blood sugar (glucose) screening will be available for $25 until 11:30 a.m. High cholesterol may indicate heart disease and high blood sugar may indicate diabetes. Screening results, which will be mailed within two weeks, will include:

  • Total cholesterol
  • LDL cholesterol
  • HDL cholesterol
  • LDL/HDL ratio
  • Triglycerides
  • Glucose

For accurate results, participants must fast for eight to 12 hours before the screening. Water, black coffee and plain tea is allowed; medicine may be taken with water.

More than 70 local organizations that provide health-related services for seniors participate in the annual fair. This year’s theme is “Saddle Up for Good Health.” People who are 60 years or older, and those who care for seniors are encouraged to participate.
