Two community clinics gave local school districts a double benefit this past summer: They offered student athletic physicals at a reduced price, then donated half the proceeds to the athletic departments at schools the students attend.
The Mediapolis Clinic and Wapello Clinic participated in the program. Both are part of Great River Health Systems.
Altogether, 135 students received physicals, and Great River Health Systems, in turn, donated $2,025 to these school districts:
· Louisa Muscatine
· Winfield - Mount Union
Certified physician assistants and a physician conducted the physicals, and certified athletic trainers from Great River Athletic and Performance Center conducted total body orthopedic screenings, which included strength, range-of-motion and ligament testing. If weaknesses were found in any of these areas, such as tight hamstrings, the students received instructions for exercises that could help prevent sports injuries.
